With the spectrum scarcity looming, License-Assisted Access (LAA) increases capacity without additional spectrum costs. The technology enables service providers to offload traffic to LTE small cells or femtocells, without having to implement a wireless local area network (WLAN).
The initial focus of LAA is the 5GHz ISM band, which is used for WLAN. The technology works by triggering a modified form of LTE air interface that enables co-existence with WLAN in the unlicensed band. The result is faster downlink speeds, an improved user experience and rich quality of service.
